Helping Seniors Stay Healthy

Dr Theodora Fynn

Head of Internal Medicine

One of the most common questions families ask is, “What can we do to help our parents stay healthy as they age?” The answer isn’t about one medicine or one test—it’s about steady, thoughtful care over time.

Staying active is one of the most important factors. This doesn’t mean intense exercise. Regular walking, light stretching, and simple strength or balance activities help maintain mobility, reduce the risk of falls, and support heart health. Even small amounts of daily movement make a difference.

Nutrition matters just as much. As we age, appetite and digestion change, but the body still needs good protein, fruits, vegetables, and adequate fluids. Undernutrition and dehydration are common and often overlooked causes of weakness and illness in seniors.

Regular medical follow-up helps catch problems early. Conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, vision changes, and memory issues are easier to manage when identified early rather than after complications develop. Medication reviews are also essential, as seniors are more sensitive to side effects and interactions.

Mental and social health play a major role in physical well-being. Staying connected with family, friends, and community helps protect against depression, cognitive decline, and isolation. Good sleep and a consistent daily routine also support long-term health.

At Afrusan, our goal is not just to treat illness, but to help seniors maintain independence, dignity, and quality of life for as long as possible. Healthy aging is about ongoing care, attention, and partnership—one day at a time.
